Feeling Overwhelmed Caring For An Aging Parent? Here's How To Fix It…

Are You At Risk For The Invisible
Caregiver's Disease?

From the Desk of:
Martin R. Sabel

Dear Friend,

My name is Martin Sabel and I've been a family Elder Care Strategist for more than 15 years. Perhaps you have read some of my articles, listened to my radio show "Ask Mr. Eldercare" or read one of my books on caring for aging parents.

The reason I mention all this is because every family caregiver I know sooner or later becomes concerned about their increased stress levels and its effect upon their health.  If you are one of them, this could be the most important letter you ever read.

Providing care to your aging Mom or Dad exacts a huge toll physically and emotionally. And it's stressful whether your efforts are needed full-time, part-time, or long distance.

Do You Know This?

If you feel that caring for a loved one has increased your stress level, you are not alone.  More than half of all family caregivers admit that the demands of caregiving increased their level of daily stress.  Yet most family caregivers don't understand the link between their stress load and its effect on their health.

Because you dedicate yourself to the needs of your parent, you're probably neglecting your own.  I'm willing to bet you a steak dinner your

Odds are your body is giving you plenty of warning signs but you either don't recognize them or choose to ignore them.

And that's a bad idea.

Numerous studies now connect the link between stress, caregiving and poor health. Researchers at both Ohio State University and the University of North Caroline discovered caregiver stress impairs the immune system by multiplying the quantity of a blood protein called IL-6.  The excess production is one reason caregivers are at an increased for everything from colds and flue to serious, chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Another study at the University of California at San Francisco found that the chronic stress of caring can shortens cell life.

So What Is This Invisible
Caregivers Disease?

Stress is called the invisible disease because the effects can sometimes hide for years.  Stress builds up over time. It's like dropping rocks in a pack on your back. At first, the extra burden isn't much of a problem. Over time the weight grows.  Getting through life becomes harder and harder.  By then, it's often too late.

Here is a partial list of physical and emotional indicators The American Institute of Stress lists as signs of excess stress.  If you're suffering from any of them is could be a direct result of the pressure of your caregiving role:

Anxiety

Lack of self confidence

Frequent colds

Sleeplessness

High Blood Pressure

Weight change

Irritable bowel syndrome

Colitis
Tingling in toes
Social Isolation
Moodiness
Inability to concentrate
Eating or drinking in excess
Increased use of alcohol

Left unchecked this pressure can lead to heart attacks, stroke, depression, certain cancers, even dementia!

I'm not telling you this to frighten you. Far from it. I want you to know the extent the challenge of caregiving can affect your long term health so you can do something about it. Most people in your situation never realize the impact on their well-being until it's too late.

I don't want that to happen to you.

Has This Happened
To You?

My stress issues started way before my Dad's health decline. Even though I had a good diet and exercised, I was lucky to get 5 hours of sleep at night.  Stress from work shot up my blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

In 1994 when my Dad had one of the worst health years of his life, the pressure on me doubled.

When I'm under stress, I turn to food for comfort. It's not healthy foods like carrots and apples either!  I dive into anything made with flour and sugar- breads, muffins, scones, cookies and cakes. You name it. Oh…and peanut butter, too. I can polish off a X ounce jar of Laura Scudder's in a day or so when I'm really stressed out!

Needless to say, I gained weight.

When the tension died down, I would temporarily come to my senses and swear off my comfort foods.  But no matter how much exercise I did, my belly fat would not go away.

One solution was to go to the doctor and get a prescription for anti-anxiety pills. That idea didn't appeal to me at all. I hate taking prescription drugs (particularly "downers' like Xanax or Valium).  But I was tired of being fat, short tempered, drained of energy, anxious and catching every cold or flu that came around.

I realized if I didn't take steps right away, I was jeopardizing both my health and my Dad's

My Surprise Discovery...

I began researching natural stress relief methods.  I discovered a huge variety of exceptionally simple and effective actions that improved my ability to cope with stress.

When your parents have serious health issues your stress level can ramp up 5 to 10 times. It's part of the territory. You can't get rid of it.  So if you can't eliminate a big negative in your life, the next best approach is to figure out how to manage it so it doesn't manage you.

Over the past 15 years, hundreds of families told me how much better they felt as a result of my help.  I dismissed their expressions of emotional relief as nothing more than the relief one gets when good advice is received and applied.

But the more I learned about stress and caregiving, the more I realized the real connection between stress and caregivers health. So, I decided to actively share with clients some of the effective stress management tools I was using successfully.

One client, drenched with worry about her Mom's declining health, wasn't sleeping at night. Another was at her wits end with out-of-state siblings who believed her Mom was at a higher functioning level than she really was. They thought she was over reacting and didn't really need the kind of help she was asking for.

When the first client called to thank me for helping her sleep better at night, I was thrilled. When the second client mentioned her headaches had lessened because of one of the secrets I shared I began to pay even closer attention to the physical and emotional impact of my work.

The Secret To Getting More, Less
Stress and Better Health

Like the 55 year old son who walked into my office literally stooped over from the pressure the daily care for his elderly Mom weighed on his shoulders.  As he understood how to better handle the turbulent challenges he faced he actually began walking taller.

And the client who mentioned her mother's diabetes which had not been controllable with medication for the 5 years she cared at home for a husband stricken with Alzheimer's. Yet, after helping her understand the options for financing nursing home care, her blood sugar stopped fluctuating wildly.

Plus, another client who wrote crediting the caregiving guidance as the reason she shed over 35 pounds of excess weight.  She handled her stress like I had- by turning to unhealthy comfort foods like donuts and chocolate candy.

Keep in mind, I'm not a health professional.  Yet, the work I do has profound health benefits for many of my clients.

That revelation deepened my curiosity about the connection between stress and caregiver health.  A few paragraphs back I mentioned that a little over half of family caregivers report they are stressed and worried as a result of caregiving.

That little fact got me thinking...

What Less-Stressed Caregivers
Know That Overwhelmed
Caregivers Don't

Why is it that in two families dealing with similar issues one gets overwhelmed and the other seems immune to the daily pressures?

What is their secret?

I figured if you could understand precisely what it was that put some families more at ease, I could my clients better cope with the emotional ups and downs of helping their parents.

A volunteer from Houston CanCare, the local chapter of a national cancer support group, suggested I interview a local family therapist who helped cancer survivors and their family find beneficial ways of handling caregiver stress.

Her name is Kathleen Divita and once I learned about her background I jumped at the chance. As a psychotherapist she knows well the technical aspects of stress management. It's what she deals with in her practice every day.

But that's not why you should listen to what she has to say.

What makes Kathleen noteworthy is her uncommon experience of personally dealing with the stress of providing care for not one, not two, but three senior family members: her mother, her step-Mom AND her Dad.

Most of us only deal with caregiving issues once in our lifetime.  But she's been there three times. The combination of her professional training and her "in the trenches" caregiving experience means one thing: Kathleen understands how to survive the emotional twists and turns of elder care.

She provided eye-opening insights about the root causes for the stress you're probably dealing with right now and a series of down-to-earth, you-can-do-this steps that put that stress in its place.

Lucky for you, I recorded the whole conversation so you can personally use her tested ideas to turn down the tension volume in your life.

Imagine how you would feel if you could:

Have more time for yourself
Stop stress from taking a greater toll on your health
Finally get a full nights sleep again…not just once but several nights every week
Shrink the anxiety of dealing with so many complicated issues
Enjoy more of your life again

Kathleen reveals proven tools that do all this and more. You'll find out how to channel your tension away from you and towards positive results for you, your Mom and the rest of your family.
